Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Certain upgrades require charges for use. The Jeweler can create all kinds of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones, which you must be at a certain level to get. Jewels can be substituted with another one without damaging the original. You are able to replace the jewel only once in a piece of equipment.
It is typical to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and make a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to them.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing soon, followed by any items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is especially true when you're looking to upgrade several statistics on an item. It's more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.
In the beginning of the game, junglers will usually want to upgrade their trinket to a red, while top and mid players will usually opt for either a pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices can affect the ability of a hero to control the map.
In addition to the items mentioned above, players can also discover other trinkets in form of trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones within the story, such as finishing a chapter's main quest or killing a certain boss. They can be viewed by selecting the appropriate achievement in the reward tab of the hero menu.
